Spring Capsule Wardrobe
My thought process around capsule wardrobes and wish list items for the season.
It’s 4pm on a Friday afternoon and I’m actually excited to sit down and write after a busy week of running around in preparation for a furniture install at one our projects next week. Usually, I’m totally checked out by the end of the week, but I had one extra hour of the work day before we meet with friends for dinner and just felt compelled to write! I already had this post in the works since Dôen dropped their prelude capsule a couple weeks ago so this just felt like a day at the candy shop.
When shopping for new pieces each season, I like to be pretty selective and attempt to “solve” dressing dilemmas I found from the season prior. I’ve learned to stick to my personal style values: timeless, elegant and comfortable. This might be a silly one, but I also ask myself when buying a new piece, is this chic? Examples of this might include an exagerated sleeve on a classic button up or a pair of French-inspired sunnies that would elevate a simple pair of jeans and a white tee.
I also try to buy slightly higher quality pieces I know will last and avoid the endless fast fashion and overly trendy items out there. Don’t get me wrong, this is budget willing, but I also think of it like this: if you don’t buy those 4-5 random pieces from Zara or H&M that you will probably get sick of or else it’ll wear out in a short time, you can afford that timeless cashmere sweater that’ll last you years and years to come.
A way I organize and stay on track with my purchases is by making a mood board of the items I’m eyeing for the upcoming season. I usually do this two times a year at the beginning of the new seasons: spring/summer and fall/winter. This allows me to focus on key pieces and avoid impulse spending.
DÔEN
Since this post spurred from Dôen’s early spring drop (one of my favourite brands ever), I’ll start here. When the weather gets warmer I love a flowy dress like this or this and no one makes them better. I ordered this cropped cardigan that will pair well with my existing spring and summer dresses and wider leg/baggier denim. I also love the look of this versatile V-neck sweater and skirt combo. I’ve collected a few of their dresses over the years and always bring them back out in the warmer months. An added bonus: most of their pieces are maternity and nursing friendly.
Basics
Once a year, I also like to re-stock a few basic pieces like an elevated pair of sneakers and a couple new white t-shirts. For a more budget-friendly sneaker, I’d opt for this one. I’m also in need of a new pair of black flats — my existing ones I’ve sadly worn to shreds. I love these ones from Dôen because they feel ultra feminine, great with a pair of cropped denim.
Outerwear
One piece I already own from last year is the Totême trench coat which I wear almost everyday. In my opinion this is such a wardrobe staple and the slightly oversized silhouette of this one is just so good. Highly recommend!
Accessories
In terms of accessories, I’m not always able to splurge on special pieces, but I’ve been eyeing this purse for a while now and hoping to save up to buy it later this spring. I’m not into overly trendy designer bags and this iconic one goes with everything. I’m also eyeing a new work tote and this one has been on my radar since last fall. I love the brown, but also wouldn’t mind going with the green for spring/summer.
I’m also loving these oval-shaped sunnies. They’re not overly exciting in terms of what’s trendy, but it’s another piece I haven’t wavered on for over a year so I know it’s something I want to add to my wardrobe.
Wardrobe Icons
Other pieces I’ve added to my list include a striped long sleeve, a flowy blouse and a cream-coloured pair of straight leg jeans. These are all wardrobe staples in my books. I had an old pair of white denim that I didn’t love the fit of so I ordered these ones, which I already own and love in a blue denim.
As a side note, I recently switched to ShopMy, which you can find all the spring capsule pieces here.
Chat next week! xx
